Break Strength Vs. Working Load
TENSILE STRENGTH EXPLANATION
Please note that the provided "Tensile Strength" originates from laboratory tests conducted on fresh cord. Real-world tensile strengths can vary depending on the specific use and the anchoring methods employed. It is up to the customer to decide the best method of fastening for their particular need.
SAFE LOAD GUIDELINES
The true Safe Working Load can be influenced by factors such as how the cord is used, its age, and the anchoring methods chosen. A commonly suggested guideline by numerous manufacturers is to determine the safe working load by dividing the lab-tested tensile strength by a factor that offers a realistic estimate of the maximum load the cord can safely handle. This factor isn't consistent for all cords; it varies based on the cord's material and weave. Due to the myriad of conditions a cord may encounter, the manufacturer cannot guarantee a specific safe working load.
A widely accepted estimate suggests that a cord's working load is typically ~25% of its lab-tested Tensile strength. Moreover, the choice and execution of a knot can also affect the cord's strength. A knot tied incorrectly can compromise the tensile strength by up to 20% or even more.
For our braided cords, we recommend the Bristol or Palomar knots or using the "finger-trap" method. These knots are also suitable for micro ropes and multifilament fibers.
